The soils are clay-limestone, of the rolled pebble type.\nThese are very hard granitic metamorphic rocks of alpine origin called Quartzite (mainly composed of silica). Their rounded and polished shape reveals the work of the Rhône waters over the ages.\nIn Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the pebbles are mixed with red clay rich in iron oxide. This quartzite \/ clay association is exceptional in geology.
